hi smiffy

in response to your query regarding hitting a ball frozen on the cushion
picky is right it is a legal shot if the white ball glances off the object ball onto the same cushion -i was not aware and have always played something has to hit another cushion you live and learn.

not explicit enough in the rules but covered in the following and it is implied as such

Interpretations:

If the Cue Ball's initial contact is with an Object Ball that is touching a cushion, simply forcing that Object Ball into the same cushion does not constitute a Legal Shot.

If the Cue Ball and the Object Ball are touching the same cushion, simply forcing the Cue Ball and / or that Object Ball into the same cushion does not constitute a Legal Shot.

hope this helps[/b]

Yep I agree. I have never actually read the rule in full. I was told or lead to believe that it was a foul and never bother to read the rule to qualify it.

If you see the "guidance" bit on the EPA website there is a further clarification of the situation thus:-
If a player plays into a ball touching a cushion, and the cue ball simultaneously contacts the "ball on" and the cushion, a legal shot has NOT been completed.

Dave note:
So the cue ball has to contact to the frozen cushion AFTER contacting the frozen ball (before or at the same time is a foul).

Also (from EPA website):-
If a player plays into a ball touching a cushion, and that ball comes away from the cushion and returns to the same cushion, without touching another object ball, then the shot is a foul. However, if that ball comes away from the cushion, hits another object ball, and returns to the original cushion, then the shot is legal.

Dave note: Some other rules that I was not aware of:-
If a player plays a shot that causes a ball to enter a pocket and jump out, without making contact with a cushion, then no penalty for failing to hit a cushion will apply. For the purposes of the Legal Shot rule (determining if a ball has hit a cushion), the back of the pocket will count as a cushion.

Simultaneous initial contact between a "ball on", and a "ball not on", is NOT a foul. (Dave note: this differs from Snooker, as in Snooker this is a foul).

I thought I knew the rules, but obviously I don't know them as well as I thought.
