Match Date Friday 1st Feb
Excellent match played with true spirit between 2 sides looking forward to putting 3 points up on the leaderboard. Both sides fielding a couple of promising juniors and a few old heads to play jockey to the young stallions.
A big thank you goes out to the staff at the club for making Kirkstead feel welcome and for supplying the man of the match trophies for future county matches.
A good sized crowd turned up to watch the match on a bitter, snowy night. Local support was boyant & when their side fell behind they refused to throw the towel in & kept willing SWMC on to win even though they found themselves 3 - 6 down after the 1st 9, with the Kirkstead juniors performing well & winning both frames.
This support started to pay dividends as the score came back to 7-6 Kirkstead. With 5 left to play, old hands Paddy, Adrian, Carl to play along with Juniors Callum & Ashley a tough battle was needed to be fought. Paddy went 1st and won, Callum then lost, Adrian then lost making the score level at 8 all.
Next up for Kirkstead was Ashley Banks playing only his 2nd frame in a senior team & pulled out a great clearance to go 9 - 8 in the lead. His concentration & determination to win under extreme pressure was a lesson for others in the squad to learn who had crashed & burned earlier in the evening & threw a big lead away and wasted chances.
It was up to the captain Carl to steer his team to victory or lose for a draw, and yet from his break ended up having to take 17 shots where he didn't have a pot on and was limited to making his opponent's life as difficult as possible until a chance came his way. This became a tense battle of tactics which ended with some terrible luck for SWMC to allow the 3 points to be taken by the Kirkstead Captain.
Special mention to: Paddy, Carl, Wayne, Ashley, Brett & Picky who all won 2 out of 2. On the night there were a couple who were left dazed and wondered about what could have been as several players lost 2 out of 2.
